Tucked away in the picturesque hills of southeastern Ohio lies Hocking Hills State Park, a hidden treasure known for its stunning landscapes, remarkable rock formations, and tranquil waterfalls. This park is a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and those looking for a peaceful escape. With iconic sites like Grandma Gatewood’s Trail, the mesmerizing Devil’s Bathtub, Old Man’s Cave, and the serene Ash Cave, Hocking Hills offers an unforgettable experience that showcases nature’s breathtaking beauty.

A Hidden Gem

Often overlooked in favor of more well-known destinations, Hocking Hills is truly a best-kept secret. It features a network of trails that weave through ancient forests and past stunning cliffs, offering a blend of adventure and serenity. The park’s diverse ecosystems host an array of flora and fauna, making it a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Grandma Gatewood’s Trail: A Tribute to Adventure

One of the most celebrated trails in the park is Grandma Gatewood’s Trail, named after the legendary Emma Gatewood. As the first woman to hike the entire Appalachian Trail solo, she inspired generations of hikers. This trail spans over 30 miles, winding through breathtaking landscapes and offering a variety of terrains. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a novice, Grandma Gatewood’s Trail is an invitation to explore and discover the beauty of Hocking Hills. As a matter of fact, I heard about Hocking Hills in the book about Grandma Gatewood. It described Hocking Hills, I looked up more information about it, and added it to my travel list.

Devil’s Bathtub: Nature’s Marvel

One of the park’s highlights is the stunning Devil’s Bathtub. This unique geological formation features a deep, circular pool surrounded by smooth rock formations, which glisten under the sunlight. The emerald waters are inviting, especially after a rain when the area comes alive with the sound of rushing water. It’s an ideal spot for a refreshing dip or a moment of quiet reflection, surrounded by the lush greenery that defines Hocking Hills.

The Scenic Hike from Devil’s Bathtub to Old Man’s Cave

One of the most rewarding hikes in the park is the scenic trail that connects Devil’s Bathtub to Old Man’s Cave. This journey takes you through enchanting woodlands and along serene streams, with each turn revealing a new aspect of the park’s natural beauty. As you walk, you’ll encounter vibrant wildflowers, towering trees, and the soothing sounds of water cascading over rocks.

When you arrive at Old Man's Cave, , you are greeted by its impressive sandstone cliffs and historical significance. Named after Richard Rowe, who lived there in the 1800s, this area boasts intricate rock formations, breathtaking views, and a tranquil atmosphere. The combination of history and nature here is captivating, inviting visitors to soak in the beauty surrounding them.

Ash Cave: A Serene Sanctuary

Continuing your adventure, you don’t want to miss Ash Cave, known for its majestic overhang and picturesque waterfall. After a rain and in the spring, the water flows over the top of the cave creating an enchanting experience. The short, accessible trail leading to the cave is perfect for everyone, making it a family-friendly destination.

Nature’s Beauty: A Tapestry of Seasons

Hocking Hills State Park is a place where nature’s beauty shines year-round. Each season brings its own unique charm—vibrant greens in spring, rich autumn hues, and the stark beauty of snow in winter. The park is home to diverse wildlife, from colorful birds to playful squirrels, creating a dynamic ecosystem that enchants visitors. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings, Hocking Hills offers a profound connection to nature that rejuvenates the spirit.

Hocking Hills Lodge

We stayed at Hocking Hills Lodge. Newly opened, it is a charming retreat nestled in the landscape. There are breath taking views and the lodge serves as an ideal base for exploring the nearby attractions of Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave and hiking trails.
